From the moment I arrived at the Bed and Breakfast I would be staying at in Rome the woman running it informed that, “you can NOT do Rome in 24 hours.” So naturally, I set off to prove her wrong.
I arrived in Rome on an early morning flight from Split, Croatia – I was only going to be there for approximately 48 hours and planned on seeing and doing as much as I possibly could. We broke up all that we could see into two days – all of the attractions you could reach on foot in Rome : Day 1, and Vatican City: Day 2. We walked from our Bed and Breakfast which was located one street away from St. John in Lateran Basilica. First we grabbed pizza at the pizzeria next door to our Bed and Breakfast. We then checked out the basilica (ladies no knees or shoulders can be visible to enter) I found this out the hard way. Afterwards stopped in a coffee shop and had a shot of espresso, we then walked to the Colosseum. IF YOU HAVE A STUDENT ID BRING IT EVERYWHERE!!!!**** I was given discounted entry with it even though I am no longer a student (shh). If you ask me the colosseum is much more impressive from the outside… and be careful of pick pockets please! After the colosseum we walked by the ruins behind the colosseum but it was quite expensive and if you just walked around to the top of the hill you could see most of what you had to pay to see. We then walked to Plaza Venezia and Altare della Patria, where we went inside and ended up at the top outside – and shortly after were told they were closing and to leave :(.
We made our way towards Trevi Fountain – the one site i could not wait to see BUT… it was basically shut down.. no water, glass panels around it, I was devastated. Afterwards we walked to the Pantheon which at the time of night, had a dark blue sky which was visible through the hole in the roof.
We then went for one of the BEST meals of my life Antonio Al Panthenon, I had a pasta with black truffles and the house wine. This was my favorite meal I think I have had in my entire life. The food was fantastic. It started to rain on the way back, and I was a little tipsy so forgive my lack of memory but we did pass a few more sites on the walk back.
Now I know I may not have seen all Rome has to offer in one day but I did see most of it in one day, and probably 75% of it in two days. If you plan accordingly and ration your time you really can see it in just a few days. They also have an underground system if it’s too much walking (I love walking everywhere I visit because it’s free and it’s easy to see everything!) I had this great map to help me plan where I would go I have included it below.
Another Great place to eat, this time for pizza, was 4 e4otto I had wine once again, brushetta and a pizza with tomato, buffalo cheese and greens – it was so good!
On our second day we headed to the Vatican – I will cover this in another blog entry….
On our third day in Rome – we were leaving at 1 that day – we took a bus to the catacombs, they were cool but to be honest being so far below ground made me nervous.
** Be very careful of personal items more than half of the people I know who have traveled to Rome have had something stolen!
