I saw that Sarah has recently posted about her trip to Barcelona, so I decided that I would write about my visit as well for comparison. So without further ado.. I am FINALLY dedicating a blog post to my Spring Break Trip, LAST year to… Beautiful, Barcelona, Spain!
A group of friends I met while studying abroad, and myself decided to travel to Barcelona, Spain for the first week of our Spring Break. It was early April, 2014, my friends, Hannah, Megan, Sally, Jamie, Grace and I booked a RyanAir flight to Barcelona on Skyscanner.com. A great website to find cheap flights all over the world! Now, although RyanAir is fairly inexpensive – it is not my favorite airline. The take off was a bit frightening, but compared to the landing was smooth as can be. The landing was terrifying, it seemed to be more of a crash landing if you ask me.
We all arrived in Spain and took a taxi to our hostel, Amistat Beach Hostel. I would recommend an Uber nowadays if you want to save some money, Uber wasn’t very popular at the time we all
visited Spain. Our hostel was very nice, it has a decent bathroom for a hostel, was fairly quiet, included breakfast and even has a lounge area! PLUS it was within walking distance of the beach. We walked down to the beach where we found a very nice little restaurant, MAN GO restaurante. We enjoyed some delicious sangria and tapas. The prices were reasonable, especially for being right on the beach. After lunch we laid around in the sand, we were fully clothed however because although it was sunny it is not warm enough in April to go in the ocean.
We then walked around a bit and eventually had dinner and more sangria at Golfo de Bizkaia. We ordered a lot of tapas for dinner and sampled each others, this place is insanely cheap and delicious! I highly recommend it – Sangria was like two Euro! After dinner we went back to the hostel to chill out and go to sleep early so that we could get up early and go on our hostel’s free walking tour.
The following morning we went on a free walking tour of the city which was sponsored by our hostel. We then took the underground train to the Sagrada Familia – which is the most beautiful site I have ever seen! You NEED to see the Sagrada Familia if you go to Barcelona – no
excuses!
For Dinner that Evening we went to a place, La Plata which was unusual but phenomenal! We had little fish you take apart and eat with bread, tomato, and onion drizzled with olive oil. We also had wine – it was very delicious and inexpensive but we were still hungry afterwards, so we went to a nearby restaurant to have paella and more wine which we split between all of us. Unfortunately, I cannot remember the name of the paella place.
After dinner we went for drinks at the bar Espit Chupitos – now although it is quite touristy it is a MUST visit! All I am going to say is go, try several different shots but end it with the Monica Lewinsky… You’ll never be the same.
The following morning was our final day in Barcelona so we decided to spend the day at Park Guell. We hiked up a huge mountain and looked down into the area, it was so beautiful, and provided an amazing view of the city. Afterwards we grabbed pitas and beer and relaxed on the beach before Jamie, Grace and I headed to the airport to return to London.
*Wear/Pack sunscreen even if it doesn’t seem very warm
*Be very careful of pickpocketers especially in tourist areas: Park Guell, Sagrada Familia, where tour groups meet, etc.
*Our group took the underground train a lot and we didn’t see any problems or threats so feel free to do so as well
