Time to Celebrate St. Patty’s Day!

St. Patrick’s Day is only a few weeks away and is easily my favorite holiday, and not just because it falls the same weekend as my birthday, bur because this holiday always promises a good time, especially in my hometown, Chicago.  So, I have decided to dedicate an entry to eleven of the best places in the world to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day.

  1.  Ireland:  Because… duh.  Anywhere in Ireland will obviously provide you with a memorable experience for St. Patrick’s Day, but especially the city of Dublin.  Ireland has an especially enjoyable drinking culture, and the locals are some of the friendliest and NICEST people I have ever met.
  2. Chicago:  I mean, come on – I live here, I am going to be a bit bias and put Chicago high up on this list.  We dye our fuckin’ river green for this shit.  The parade is something that we all say we are going to attend but we either get too drunk before at seven in the morning and don’t make it there, or get lost along the way.  I have celebrated way too many St. Patty’s Days in Chicago that began far too early in the morning and ended in a number of peculiar places, one being on a trolley with a driver who I’m pretty sure was also celebrating this holiday.. maybe a bit too much.
  3. Boston:  Obviously, one of the best cities in the United States to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, this city has such a strong Irish heritage and a bunch of festivals and so many things to do.
  4. London:  I originally wouldn’t have guessed that London would have a huge celebration for this holiday, based on England and Ireland’s almost ancient history, but I was not only surprised but very overwhelmed by London’s St. Patrick’s Day celebration.  Tralfalger Square is PACKED with people, basically to the point that you are in a mosh pit.  The London Eye is turned green for the day, but unfortunately you cannot find Corned Beef and Cabbage basically anywhere that I looked in Central London.. Boo!
  5. New York:  New York is home to the largest St. Patrick’s Day parade with over a 150,000 participants.
  6. Philadelphia:  Supposedly has the best bar crawl for St. Patrick’s Day, and the city even has a “St. practice Day” the weekend before…
  7.  Munich, Germany:  Yeah, I would never have guessed Munich celebrated St. Patrick’s Day, but alas, the Germans love to party and drink (I mean come on, Oktoberfest)  so they have a huge parade and a bunch of activities this time of year.
  8. Buenose Aires:  Yeah, I never would have guessed this city – but I read it online, so yeah.
  9.  Syndey, Austalia: I have read that a high number of Irish people live in Sydney and that Sydney has a huge festival for St. Patrick’s Day, my friend Melissa will be there for it this year so I will just have to see what she thinks about it!
  10. Zagreb, Croatia:  This city has an entire week dedicated to Irish culture the week of St. Patricks Day, doesn’t get much better than that.
  11. Thessalaniki, Greece:  Who would have guessed that one of my heritage countries is home to many, many people of another heritage of mine!  Thessaliniki has an Irish Festival that takes place and obviously a bunch of ouzo to drink.
